The publication for metal specialists, Foundry Planet, reported on the precision machining capabilities of CNC Onsite. Achieving millimeter-level tolerances in today’s large-diameter tower flanges is no small feat. Flat flanges are essential to ensure structural integrity, maintain correct bolt preload, and prevent fatigue damage over the 20+ year lifetime of a wind turbine.

CNC Onsite’s Goliath machine, leased to Welcon for post-manufacturing flange milling, demonstrated what’s possible. The process guarantees flanges are flat to the industry standard of 2.5 mm — but CNC Onsite went much further. For the first batch of tower flanges produced by Welcon for Vestas, the machine achieved a record 0.21 mm flatness tolerance.
