North America Clean Energy: machining offshore flanges to precision

CNC Onsite machine achieves 0.21 mm tolerance for Vestas 15 MW V236 tower flanges

North American Clean Energy, a publication reporting on renewable energy innovations for a North American audience, has reported on the story that CNC Onsite’s precision milling machine has achieved impressive tolerances for the tower flanges that Welcon is producing for Vestas 15 MW V236 turbines. These turbines from Vestas will be used in Germany and the Netherlands.

The tower flanges for Vestas measure more than 7 meters in diameters. The specifications for the flanges were 1 mm and the CNC Onsite machine achieved 0.21 mm for the first batch.

Achieving the industry tolerance of 2.5 for flanges this size is a challenge let alone 1 mm, which was the specification for this project

Wind turbine tower flange tolerances are specified within the IEC 61400-6 standard
