Kermit

Mobile 4-axis CNC gantry milling machine for on-site high-precision machining of holes and surfaces in large structures.

Kermit is a purpose-built 4-axis portal milling machine developed by CNC Onsite for high-precision machining of holes in large offshore transition pieces (TPs). Unlike modular machining systems designed to handle a wide range of tasks, Kermit has been engineered and optimized for one specific purpose: producing holes with exceptional accuracy, repeatability, and surface quality.

The machine is used to machine a wide range of hole geometries, including scallop holes, cable sealing openings, large-diameter holes, elongated holes, and angled hole configurations. By replacing traditional flame cutting and subsequent manual grinding with CNC-controlled milling, Kermit delivers significantly tighter tolerances, improved surface quality, and a more controlled manufacturing process.

Designed to operate directly inside the transition piece, Kermit is mounted and positioned using an integrated magnetic system and adjustable maneuvering wheels. This allows the machine to follow the rotation of the component while minimizing manual handling and setup time.

With its rigid steel construction, tilting spindle head, and ability to machine holes ranging from Ø50 mm to large oval openings, Kermit enables manufacturers to achieve consistent, repeatable results while improving productivity and reducing rework.

The result is a faster, safer, and more precise machining process that supports the growing quality requirements of the offshore wind industry.

Applications

WHERE WE USE IT

Scallop Holes

Machining of scallop holes in transition pieces with controlled geometry and surface quality, helping manufacturers meet strict tolerance requirements while reducing manual finishing work.

Cable Sealing Openings

Precision machining of openings for cable sealing systems, ensuring accurate dimensions and repeatable results for downstream installation processes.

Elongated and Oval Holes

Machining of elongated and oval hole geometries with high positional accuracy and consistent quality across large steel structures.

Angled Hole Machining

The 4-axis milling head enables precision machining of holes and openings on inclined surfaces, supporting complex transition piece designs and fabrication requirements.

Custom Hole Geometries

Kermit can be configured to machine a wide range of hole shapes and dimensions, providing manufacturers with greater flexibility while maintaining controlled tolerances and repeatable results.
